Hyderabad's plant seasons, in short
- March-May (hot, dry): Temperatures climb to 40-43°C by May with very dry air and little rain. Balcony pots in sun can need water every day, sometimes twice.
- June-September (southwest monsoon): Moderate rain, often in heavy afternoon bursts with dry days between. Pots swing between soaked and dry, so check before you water.
- October-November (after the rains): Warm days, cooler nights, occasional late showers. A good time to repot and cut back plants stressed by the summer.
- December-February (mild, dry): Pleasant days and cool nights around 14-16°C, dry air. Indoor plants usually need water every 5-7 days.
Going away from Hyderabad?
- 3-day trip: from November to February, water well and group pots in indirect light; no visit needed. In April-May, even three days is too long for small pots in sun: bring them indoors or have someone come once.
- 1 week: in March-May, a visit every 2 days (3-4 visits) for balcony pots. In the monsoon, 1-2 visits. In winter, 1 visit.
- 2 weeks or more: 6-7 visits in summer for pots in sun; 2-4 the rest of the year.

Balcony and terrace pots in Hyderabad
The high-rise gated communities of Gachibowli, Kondapur and Kokapet often have west-facing balconies that take the full afternoon sun, the harshest spot for a pot from March to May; a bamboo blind or shade net over those months helps a lot. Independent houses with terrace gardens, common in Kukatpally, Secunderabad and the older parts of the city, face the same heat plus wind. Many homes run on borewell or tanker water, which is often hard and leaves white salt crusts on soil and pots; flush each pot with plenty of water once a month so salts don't build up around the roots. Bougainvillea, adenium, curry leaf, jade and snake plants handle Hyderabad summers best; ferns and calatheas do better indoors.
